Update: HIGHWAY 11 FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION

(ATIKOKAN, ON) – On December 17, 2013, at 12:58 pm officers from the Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with Rainy River District Emergency Medical Services and the Atikokan Fire Rescue Service responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 11 approximately 1.5 kilometers east of Highway 633. The collision involved an eastbound Chevrolet Lumina and a west bound commercial motor vehicle.

The deceased occupant of the Chevrolet Lumina has been identified as Fredrick James MUNRO, age 76 years of Atikokan, ON. The second occupant of the Lumina, a 71year old female also of Atikokan, was transported to local hospital with serious injuries and then transported to hospital in Thunder Bay, ON. The driver of the commercial motor vehicle, a 49 year old male of Thunder Bay, ON, was not injured in the collision. The highway was closed to traffic while emergency crews responded and police conducted their initial investigation but has since reopened completely.

Police are working in consultation with the Regional Coroner office. A post mortem is expected to take place today at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Members of the Rainy River District OPP Detachment are continuing to investigate the collision in consultation with the North West Region Traffic and Marine Section and Technical Traffic Collision Investigators.
