OPP WARNING RESIDENTS NOT TO SHARE PERSONAL INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE OR INTERNET

(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment is once again warning residents to be aware or providing personal information over the telephone or internet.

A recent incident has occurred when someone contacted a Norfolk County resident over the phone stating that they were a Bell Canada Employee offering services at a reduced rate. The caller requests personal information about the person as well as credit card information. The scammer was unsuccessful in this incident however Norfolk County OPP wants to remind citizens that they should never provide personal information over the telephone or internet.

In another incident an email from an alleged financial institution was received and in the Subject line was “Your account is temporarily suspended”. This definitely catches your attention however when you open the attachment, the form that you have to fill out in order to continue banking without interruption requires all of your personal information including credit card number, expiry date, PIN (personal identification number) as well as your social insurance number and your mother’s maiden name.

The OPP Norfolk County detachment continues to receive reports from residents stating they have been or attempted to be defrauded. Don’t be a victim. Fraud is a multi-billion dollar enterprise that will only stop when the scammers stop getting money, banking information or personal information.
