OPP WEEKEND BUSY WITH COLLISIONS

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) From Friday January 24, 2014 at midnight to Monday January 27, 2014 at 7:00 am, Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has been extremely busy with motor vehicle collisions as a result of the inclement weather conditions that struck Northumberland County on Friday and Saturday causing bad driving conditions and poor visibility.

Provincially 1,600 collisions were reported, but locally Northumberland OPP officers responded to 130 collisions on County and municipal roadways over the course of the three days. Fortunately there were only minor non-life threatening injuries reported in a few instances. Three Northumberland OPP cruisers were damaged as a result of motorists colliding with them while the officers were already investigating a crash. The detachment resources were taxed to the limit, but our officers worked diligently and professionally to make sure that everyone was assisted and kept safe.

Police would like to remind motorists that are travelling today to exercise caution while driving as there is still possibility of white out conditions in some area because of blowing and drifting snow. There is also potential for black ice in some areas.

Please keep some distance from snow plows and sanders to allow the drivers to do their job of clearing the roads safely.
