One Car, Two Drivers, Ten Charges

Two Quebec men are in custody facing numerous criminal charges following a vehicle stop on Highway 401 in Napanee on Saturday night.

Shortly after 9:00 pm a citizen called police to report that an eastbound Dodge Charger with Quebec licence plates was being operated in an erratic manner. Shortly afterward a Napanee OPP officer located the vehicle near Deseronto Road and pulled it over near the Highway 41 interchange.

As the officer approached the vehicle, she saw that inside, the driver and passenger were hastily switching seating positions.

However, as officers spoke with the ‘new’ driver, they could see that he was exhibiting symptoms of obvious impairment. The man was placed under arrest for both impaired care or control of a motor vehicle as well as obstructing police. The ‘passenger’ was also arrested for obstructing police and further investigation revealed that he was breaching a number of bail and probation conditions as well. Both men were taken to the Napanee detachment where they were held in custody awaiting a bail hearing.

Charged with possession of cannabis, impaired care or control of a motor vehicle and obstructing police is 47 year-old Basil TRENCH of Lasalle, Que. Charged with possession of cannabis, 2 counts of breaching bail conditions, 2 counts of violating probation conditions, obstructing police and driving without a licence is 23 year-old Josaiah LONGMORE-EDWARDS of Montreal, Que.

Both men will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Napanee on Tuesday afternoon for a bail hearing.
