(HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, ON) – On Tuesday February 25, 2014 at approximately 9:00 pm a Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was conducting speed enforcement on County Road 28 in Hamilton Township, Ontario when a vehicle was observed speeding and failed to stop for the officer.
The OPP officer was conducting speed enforcement on County Road 28 south of 7th line when a northbound vehicle was found to be travelling 136 km/hour in a posted 80 km/hour zone. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle but it failed to pull over. The red Ford mustang was followed by OPP through area roads and eventually stopped on County Road 9 near Bowmanton Road by the officer and another assisting OPP officer.
The officers entered into an investigation into the vehicle and the driver eventually determining that the lone male had taken the mustang from a friend without her permission. The male was also found to be under the influence of alcohol.
Daniel W JOHNSTON, 38 from Port Hope, Ontario has been charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code:
Take motor vehicle without consent
Dangerous operation of motor vehicle
Fail to stop for police
Impaired driving
Drive motor vehicle with more than 80 milligrams blood alcohol content.
He has also been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with the following offences:
Race motor vehicle
Driving under suspension
No validation on plate.
The accused has been issued a 90 day drivers licence suspension. He was held in police custody until sober when he was released on a promise to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on Wednesday April 2, 2014 in Cobourg, Ontario. The vehicle was returned to the rightful owner without further issues.
