(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment is reminding everyone to be cautious of phone calls being received throughout Norfolk County where residents are being told that their computer has a virus. The caller may represent himself or herself as an employee of a major computer or soft-ware company.
The caller usually asks the home owner to turn the computer on and to permit the caller access to the computer in order to repair the damage or rid the computer of a virus. The caller may also ask for personal banking information and then for payment, the caller will unlock the home owner’s computer.
Remember, if your computer has a virus, you probably will know it without having a stranger call you to tell you about it. Be suspicious of calls from strangers who want to do anything with your computer and never give out personal information or banking information.
If you grant a person access to your computer, that person can lock you out of your own computer while they search around for banking and personal information.
You can use local computer businesses to check and repair your computer if you think you have a virus or if a phone call from someone makes you nervous about a virus in your computer. Take control of your situation and don’t let a stranger on the phone control your computer.
