(SOUTH BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – On July 27th, 2011 at 11:46 am, the South Bruce OPP received information on an attempted scam from a resident of the Municipality of Kincardine. A phone call was received asking that the computer be turned on because it had a virus. When asked to identify their company, the caller gave 2 different names, “Microsoft Research†and “Computer Maintenanceâ€Â. The call was ended with no personal information shared and no access granted to the computer. Microsoft is a company that is well known for their work with computers, this particular call was not made by Microsoft. The South Bruce OPP is sending a reminder to area residents to be careful with unsolicited phone calls. “If you don’t make the call, how can you be sure the caller is who they say they are?†Anyone interested in more information on fraud can call the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre at 1 888 495 8501 or online at http://www.antifraudcentre.ca.
