Save Walkerton Jail – Closure Could Cost Winghamites $100/Household/Year

Without public consultation or input, the provincial government has said it will close the jails in Walkerton and Owen Sound by the end of this year to cut costs. The Sarnia jail is to be closed once a new one is built in Windsor.

This downloading from the current provincial government is estimated to cost the Wingham ward $26,292 in extra transportation costs. The WPS may also have to hire one more constable for an additional cost of $72,000. This brings the total to approximately $100,000. With approximately one thousand homes in Wingham, the average downloaded burden will be approximately $100 per family.

The NDP leader Andrea Horwath has promised to keep the Walkerton jail open if the New Democratic Party wins the upcoming election in October.

Without any community input the McGuinty Liberals wrote off the Walkerton jail along with jails in Sarnia and Owen Sound as underutilized and inefficient
