(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Norfolk County Detachment responded to an incident at a Woodstock Avenue, Long Point, Norfolk County, Ontario, address.
On Saturday, August 9, 2014 at approximately 6:34 p.m., members of the Norfolk County OPP and Norfolk County Paramedics responded to the Long Point Beach located off Woodstock Avenue and Pike Lane for a report of an unresponsive two year old child in Lake Erie.
Through investigation, police have determined that a 2 year old female from Brantford, Ontario, wandered into the waters off Long Point Beach for a short period of time and ingested some water. The child was immediately pulled from the lake causing the child to cough up water.
Upon arrival of police and paramedics, the child was walking around, was alert and appeared in good health. Police are reminding all residents and tourists with children that parental and/or responsible adult supervision is required whenever youngsters are engaging in activity that puts them in situations that may challenge their safety. Nothing can substitute for hands-on supervision and direction. The OPP strongly urges parents or caregivers to always ensure youngsters who are identified as weak or non-swimmers, always wear a lifejacket or personal floatation device when at or near open bodies of waters and back yard pools
“We are urging all Ontarians to take personal responsibility for ensuring water safety for themselves and their children which include basic safety practices such as learning to swim at an early age; wearing a lifejacket or a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) while on a vessel or swimming. Young children or non-swimmers should always wear a PFD while in the water in case they become in distress. This can make the difference between surviving, or not,†comments Constable Ed Sanchuk, Norfolk County OPP.
