(COCHRANE, ON) -While conducting highway patrol on Hwy 11, between Cochrane and Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario at approximately 9:30 pm on August 16, 2014, an Ontario Provincial (OPP) officer from the Cochrane detachment intercepted a Westbound speeding black pickup truck which was observed swerving all over the road. Police conducted a traffic stop and detected a strong odour of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the breath of the lone male driver and subsequently located an open container of beer within the vehicle.
As a result of the investigation the male driver was placed under arrest before being transported to the Cochrane OPP detachment and having his vehicle impounded for seven days. Results of the suitable breath samples provided to police revealed that the 24 year old driver, Steve HINCE of Kapuskasing, Ontario had an elevated blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit.
Pursuant to the investigation, the accused was charged with Criminal Code of Canada offences of Impaired operation of a motor vehicle, contrary to section 253(1)(a) and Exceed 80 milligrams blood alcohol content / Motor Vehicle, contrary to section 253(1)(b). In addition, he was charged with one count of Speeding contrary to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act and one count of Drive motor vehicle with open container of alcohol contrary to the Ontario Liquor Licence Act.
The accused was subsequently released on a Promise to Appear and is scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in Cochrane on October 14, 2014 to answer to his charges.
