(WELLINGTON COUNTY, ON) -The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Fall Seatbelt Campaign begins on September 24 and will run to October 10 at midnight. Wellington County OPP will be highly visible throughout the County enforcing seatbelt compliance including child restraints along with educating the public on proper usage.
Wellington County OPP Detachment Commander Inspector Scott Lawson says “Seatbelts are the single most important piece of equipment to vehicle occupants. The compliance rate is very high in our County but there is always room for improvement. Our officers continue to see unnecessary injuries resulting from collisions where seatbelts were not utilized; it’s so frustrating because it is so preventable.â€Â
Every person travelling in a motor vehicle must wear a seatbelt or use a child safety seat. The penalty for not wearing a seatbelt is $240 and two demerit points. Drivers are responsible for ensuring that the passengers under 16 years of age are using the seatbelt or an appropriate child car seat. Children under 13 years of age are safest in the back seat.
The simple act of buckling up is the best way to save lives and reduce injuries from collisions. Wear your seatbelt on every trip, no matter how short the trip is. It’s the law!
