PURSUIT LEADS TO CHARGES

(NORTH BAY, ON) – On Friday October 4, 2014 at approximately 11:41 p.m., a member of the North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was on general patrol westbound on Highway 17, Bonfield Township. An eastbound vehicle failed to dim their high beams. When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle by activating their emergency lights, the driver refused to stop. The vehicle in question continued on the road making several dangerous manoeuvers. The vehicle abruptly stopped and the driver and passenger ran from the vehicle. The passenger surrendered to police and the driver ran into the bush. K-9 and Emergency Responsive team were called to the scene.

OPP arrested the passenger and charged him with Take Motor Vehicle without owner’s consent contrary to the Criminal Code of Ontario. The driver of the vehicle turned himself into police and was charged with the following offences;

Take motor vehicle without owner’s consent contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Dangerous operation of motor vehicle contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Flight while pursued by peace officer contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Failure to comply with disposition contrary to the Youth Criminal Justice Act

Possession of a schedule II substance-cannabis marihuana-under 30 grams contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act

Drive motor vehicle-no licence contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

The youth cannot be named, under the YCJA.
