(HURON COUNTY, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have recently investigated some complaints from Huron residents reporting their computers are being frozen or have been locked out” after receiving pop-up messages warning them their computer has been associated with child pornography. Usually the warning messages claim to be from the RCMP or CSIS and they request the recipient pay $100 dollars via Ukash to have their computer “unlocked”.
This type of message is commonly known as “Scareware”. Scareware is designed to create such shock and anxiety that victims respond by sending money quickly. Often victims fail to report this crime as they sometimes feel embarrassed about viewing adult related websites. In the two most recent Huron County cases a Goderich man did send $100 by Ukash to have his computer unlocked and in the second case a Huron East resident checked with police first and was notified that it was indeed a scam.
