(COLLINGWOOD, ON) With the current heat wave, officers from the Collingwood and The Blue Mountains detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to 5 reports of anmials being left in vehicles yesterday alone. In most instances where police are called (in the last few months), the dogs have been reported to be in good health, some vehicles being gone upon police arrival. However, four dog owners were charged during this time in regards to leaving their dog in a hot vehicle.
Be mindful that parked cars can quickly reach deadly temperatures, even on relatively mild days with the car parked in the shade and the windows slightly open. Dogs have a limited ability to sweat; even a short time in a hot environment can be life-threatening. A dog’s normal body temperature is about 39°C and a temperature of 41°C can be withstood only for a very short time before irreparable brain damage or even death can occur.
The Collingwood and The Blue Mountains OPP would like to remind the public not to leave their pet(s) in a hot car, specially on days like this week, it could be fatal. Not only could it be fatal for your pet but it can also result in a by-law or criminal charge.
