PROTECT YOUR HOME AND VALUABLES

(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment is reminding residents to ensure your home and valuables are safe and protected.

Unfortunately crime is a part of our life, so we must do everything we can to prevent it.

With a little effort on your part, you can make your home and valuables less of a target.

Always be sure to have your vehicles, garage, sheds and homes locked and keep all valuables out of sight. Keep bicycles, ladders, lawnmowers and other items locked away in a shed or garage.

A simple way to protect your property is to MARK IT. Engraving valuables with an identifier is simple and deters criminals from stealing them. Property that is easily identified is less likely to be stolen because for the criminal it is harder to sell.

Using an electric engraver, scratch all, or a ball point pen will permanently mark your valuables. Engraving your vehicle licence plate number on your valuable will easily and quickly identify your valuables. By using your licence plate number, Police are able to trace your property. Every year thousands of dollars of recovered valuables are sold at Police auctions because it can not be identified and returned to the rightful owner.

While identifying your property, take a moment to record the Make, Model and Serial Number. In this age of digital photography taking a photo and keeping the information in a safe place will also assist in recovering your property if it ever goes missing.

“We need to take a proactive approach in protecting everyone’s property by taking some basic Crime Prevention tips and incorporating them into your daily routine such as closing all windows and doors and locking them. It is easier to prevent bad habits then to break them,” comments Inspector Zvonko Horvat, Norfolk County OPP Detachment Commander.
