(CENTRAL HURON, ON) – Less than 8 hours into the start of Operation Impact Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) had a male under arrest for Drive Motor Vehicle – Over 80 Milligrams and Race a Motor Vehicle. Operation Impact is Canada’s largest road safety campaign which takes place over the Thanksgiving Long Weekend. The focus for this weekend’s campaign is the “Big 4†driving behaviours that continue to take innocent lives on highways and roads: Impaired Driving, Lack of Occupant Restraint, Distracted Driving and all aspects of Aggressive Driving.
Early this morning at 7:30 a.m. a Huron County OPP officer identified one such driver that was demonstrating the type of driving behavior that puts all roadway users in danger. The officer spotted a southbound Honda Accord speeding along Bluewater Veterans Highway at a speed of 134 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. A traffic stop was initiated and the driver pulled over near Telephone Road.
Upon speaking with the driver the officer noted the driver had been drinking alcohol. A roadside screening test was completed which the driver failed. He was arrested and transported to the Huron OPP detachment for breath tests. He provided two samples of his breath; both were above the legal limit.
Benjamin MACLENNAN, 24, from Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh has been charged with Drive Motor Vehicle – Over 80 Milligrams of Alcohol and Race a Motor Vehicle. He has a court date scheduled for the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich on November 18, 2013. He received an automatic 90 day driver’s licence suspension and his motor vehicle has been impounded for seven days.
