Scammers Trying To Return to Canada Arrested At Toronto Airport

(HUNTSVILLE, ON) On Friday December 12, 2014 the Muskoka Crime Unit along with Huntsville Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment members arrested Dianna Rose SMIRNOW (44yrs) of Lake of Bays, Ontario. The arrest stems from an extensive investigation in 2008 that led officers to believe that she had defrauded the Ministry of Communications and Social Services with a substantial amount of money over a period of a year. The accused had left the country and a warrant for her arrest was obtained. On Friday December 12, 2014 the OPP learned that she was returning and members met her at the airport to execute the warrant.

Nicholas SMIRNOW (56yrs) also of Lake of Bays, Ontario had outstanding warrants that stemmed from a structured money related scheme that garnered national attention a number of years ago. The OPP Anti Rackets Branch was assisted by the Muskoka Crime unit in gathering information that led to charges in relation to Fraud over $5000.00 x2 and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Both accused were transported to Huntsville detachment and were held for a bail hearing on December 15, 2014. Dianna SMIRNOW will be returned to court on December 22, 2014 in Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge to answer to her charges.
