Fake Facebook Account Used To Lure Child

(Bracebridge, ON) Members of the Bracebridge Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have concluded an investigation into the luring of a young person in the town of Bracebridge. The matter came to light after some interaction between the victim and the accused on the social media site “Facebook” where the accused created a fake profile in order to make contact with the victim.

A young person from Bracebridge, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with Luring a Person Under 18 years CC172.1(1)(a).

The OPP reminds parents and young people that the internet is a wonderful tool when used wisely and continue to urge young people and their guardians to recognize the risks associated with the attractions of the online world. In order to better protect children from online predators, parents and guardians can:

Be involved and know your child’s online activity
Remind children to protect their passwords and encourage them not to share passwords with friends
Make sure children are cautious with what they post online and when using video cameras
Unplug web cams when they’re not in use
Know their child’s online friends the same way they know friends in real life
