(Municipality of Trent Lakes, ON) – The OPP credit the quick actions of Dan Greene (age 54) of Uxbridge, ON with saving the life of his neighbour in distress. Shortly after 5:30pm, on Friday, January 30, 2015. Mr. Greene observed an ATV and the rider fall through the ice. Mr. Greene made his way out onto the ice and, after numerous attempts, pulled the rider to safety.
Emergency crews from Peterborough County Ambulance, Trent Lakes Fire and the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the 911 call for assistance. Firefighters and paramedics brought the victim off the ice and into an awaiting ambulance. The victim was treated for hypothermia inside the ambulance and released to the care of his family.
If you intend on venturing out on the frozen lakes this winter, ensure you carry all safety equipment and that you have read and understood the recommended ice safety measures you need to take in case of emergency. The incident serves as a reminder, even with the cold temperatures lately, that no ice is 100% safe.
