Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers dealt with a variety of calls this past week, here are some examples:

Mar 9:

– Officers assisted Cobourg Police Service with the arrest of a male on County Rd 45 Alnwick-Haldimand Twp (3:30am)

– Report of a suspicious male jogger in bare feet, Brighton. Officers determined that this was his usual practice

– A 44 yr old Toronto man charged with driving while his licence is under suspension, Hwy 401 Port Hope (11am)

– Family dispute in Brighton between a grand daughter and her grand parents

– Family dispute in Colborne between a mother and her son

– Report of a man screaming in a Campbellford home. All was calm when officers arrived, the radio was the possible source of the noise

– Domestic disturbance in Trent Hills when one partner showed up at the house to remove some belongings. Officers counselled both parties to have a written agreement drawn up (6pm)

– Mother called police to remove her intoxicated 26 yr old son from her home, Roseneath. Male dropped off at friend’s home for night.

– Campbellford parents called police to report their intoxicated son breaking down their front door. Officers arrested and charged the 21 yr old man with Mischief Under $5,000 and Breach of Probation. He was held for a bail hearing (8pm)

Mar 10:

– A Campbellford resident reported to police that a dog was being abused. Officers spoke to the owner, viewed the dog and observed no issues relating to dog care. SPCA notified for their records.

– Report of neighbourhood kids putting dog feces in the caller’s mailbox. The children were spoken to by police and made their apologies

– Two calls received from a Cramahe Twp home related to an adult son hallucinating that people were after him. Officers apprehended the man and took him to an area hospital for treatment

– Report of person(s) cutting down trees after midnight on Humphries Rd, Percy Twp (Trent Hills). Investigation ongoing

– Northumberland OPP officers manned various points along the Highway of Hero’s (Hwy 401)

– Police attended a Cramahe Twp home at the request of an absent owner (from Toronto) to ensure that it was unoccupied. He stated that his hydro bill was too high and suspected squatters. Officers found the house to be empty, all ok.

– Police were called to an Alnwick-Haldimand Twp home by a couple who were arguing over the shower. Both of them were intoxicated, male left for the night

Mar 11:

– A downtown business on King St E Colborne was broken into at 1am. The front glass door was smashed and items yet to be determined were taken. A blue Mazda car was observed in the area. Investigation ongoing.

– A 2003 Toyota stopped Hwy 401 Port Hope for speeding. Licence plates were found to be unauthorized for the vehicle. The 31 yr old male from Waterloo was charged accordingly (4:15am)

– Officers mediated a dispute between two parties disagreeing over the sale of a car on Kijiji

– Family dispute between a Campbellford aunt and nephew over loud music. Aunt was trying to sleep after working nights. Officers spoke to nephew who turned the music down

– An 85 yr old Hastings resident reported a ‘grandparent scam’ that he did not fall for. Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre notified

– Property management company looking after a re-possessed home in Campbellford on behalf of a bank reported items missing from the home. Former owner removed items. Bank to deal with it civilly.

– Police assisted EMS at a Brighton home where a youth had overdosed in an attempt at self-harm. Youth taken to an area hospital for treatment (7pm)

– Report of a pedestrian jumping off the Cranberry Rd Hwy 401 overpass. Extensive patrols made by police and EMS, unable to verify or locate the person (10:15pm)

– Motorist stopped for speeding on County Rd 2 Grafton area (11:45pm). Found to have consumed alcohol. Test demanded and resulted within ‘warn’ range, licence suspended for 3 days

Mar 12:

– Residential alarm at a Brighton home (1:30am). Officers found no-one home but all appeared secure

– Noise complaint at a Colborne apartment building (2:15am). All was quiet when officers arrived

– Theft of two snowmobiles and trailer reported by a Industrial Dr. Campbellford business some time overnight. Trailer: silver colour Lic. #K9626K, 1998 Arctic Cat ZR600 Lic. #846568 (white in color with a black cat graphics) and 2004 Polaris 600 Lic. #925876 (grey camo graphics). Investigation ongoing

– Officers assisted the fire department with traffic control at a shed fire on Oak Hill Rd Port Hope (8am). No further police involvement

– Theft reported from the Brighton LCBO store (10:15am). Male suspect described as in his late 20’s, wearing blue jeans, grey coat and black toque carrying a black bag. Investigation ongoing

– A Colborne resident reported a ‘Microsoft Scam’ after allowing access to his computer by a fraudster identifying himself as a ‘Bell Canada’ representative. The caller confirmed with Bell that it was a scam (10:30am). Identity theft highly likely

– Police assisted CAS with an historical investigation which occurred in Campbellford

– 911 dialed from a Brighton home in error, attempting to dial Virgin mobile

– A Brighton resident reported an attempted ‘Microsoft scam’, called police rather than falling for the scam

– A Brighton resident reported an attempted ‘online loan scam’, she did not lose any money and reported it to police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre

– Witnesses reported seeing a northbound truck on County Rd 28 Port Hope, male and female occupants struggling inside. Officers located the truck and determined that there was a domestic dispute between the driver and passenger. The female passenger, who had been drinking, attempted to jump out of the truck when it was moving and was stopped by her boyfriend. Both parties had calmed down once police spoke to them. The Lindsay area couple were allowed to continue on their way, no charges resulted (6:30pm)

– Officers assisted a Brighton mother with her 14 yr old child who was having some mental health issues (11:30pm)

Mar 13: (to noon)

– Officers involved in a ‘Mock Emergency’, various areas of the County involved

– Report of a truck into a fence on Kennedy Rd Hamilton Twp Investigation ongoing

– Officers assisted a Campbellford building manager find a lost set of building keys

Northumberland OPP officers also conducted 6 RIDE programs, investigated 9 motor vehicle collisions, 24 traffic related complaints and one weapons related offence at Warkworth Institution.
