(CENTRE WELLINGTON TOWNSHIP, ON) – On March 24, 2015 the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police hosted a Cargo Crime Seminar at the Wellington County Museum in Aboyne, Centre Wellington Township.
Representatives from the Canadian Border Services Agency, the Ontario Trucking Association and Insurance Bureau of Canada along with Detectives from the Auto/Cargo Theft Unit of the York Regional Police Service all presented on various topics relating load thefts.
Cargo Crime covers a number of criminal acts including theft, fraud, and hijacking. It is also linked to smuggling and national security threats. Cargo that is stolen and sold in illegal markets, shifts revenues from legitimate businesses to criminals and depletes tax revenues.
Each year, cargo theft costs the Canadian economy $5 billion. All too often, cargo theft goes unreported.
There were over 80 people in attendance and it was great opportunity for law enforcement and business stakeholders to learn and share information in order to combat this crime.
