Guelph Police Daily News Release

  1. The speed of vehicles around Guelph is a real concern for public safety. One area, Victoria Road North and South continues to be a road where police do regular speed monitoring. On March 26/27, 2015, six motor vehicles received speeding tickets on the Victoria Road stretch including one that was clocked at 102 km/hr in a 50 km zone. That vehicle was stopped on March 27 at 5:44 a.m. driving between York Road and College Road.

    A 31-year-old Guelph male has been charged with drive motor vehicle-perform stunt-speeding by 50 or more km/hr and speeding under the Highway Traffic Act.

    The penalties if charged with a Stunt driving / Racing ticket are:

    Immediate seven day licence suspension of the driver of the vehicle.

    Immediate seven day vehicle impoundment of the vehicle being driven at the time of the incident.

    If convicted:

    Fine amounts ranging from $2,000 – $10,000

    Possible driver’s licence suspension of up to two years

    Six demerit points registered on your record

    A second conviction could have more harsh penalties with licence suspensions of up to ten years and possible jail time.

    The immediate seven day licence suspension and car impoundment are mandatory, even if the car does not belong to the driver who receives the ticket. All towing and impoundment fees are the responsibility of the driver and those costs can add up quickly.

    2. Alert for Guelph businesses

    The Guelph Police have recently received reports of counterfeit US currency being distributed at businesses within Guelph. This is a common occurrence throughout the province and businesses should always be on the alert for fraudulent bills. However, with the recent reports, we ask businesses to take extra precautions when accepting bills, especially US currency. When in doubt, you can refuse to take the bill or call police to assist.

    3. Drive over 80 mg

    On March 27, 2015 at 12:59 a.m., the Guelph Police were called about a possible impaired driver on Clair Road. Police located the vehicle on Victoria Road South and a traffic stop was conducted. Police spoke with the male driver and a demand was made for a roadside breath sample. He failed this test and was arrested.

    Robert Villeneuve, 35 years of Guelph has been charged with drive over 80 mg. He will appear in court on April 17, 2015.

    4. Theft from cars

    On March 26, 2015 the Guelph Police received two reports from Guelph residents about thefts from their cars. The locations were Sunnylea Crescent where a GPS and phone charger were taken and on Flemming Road where the front and rear plates were taken.

    This crime is easily avoided by locking your cars, keeping valuables out of sight or removed from your vehicle and parked in a well-lit and visible area where possible.
