Ottawa OPP Long Weekend Campaign Results

(OTTAWA, ON) – Over the Easter Long Weekend the OPP conducted a province-wide campaign focusing on education, and enforcement of seat belt laws.

The Ottawa Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) issued 89 Provincial Offence Notices during the campaign. These numbers contributed to the overall total of 2,090 Provincial Offence Notices issued across eastern Ontario, of which 1,376 were seatbelt charges.

The breakdown of the Ottawa OPP charges is as follows:

· 32 Seatbelt charges;

· 18 Speeding charges;

· 14 Distracted Driving charges;

· 6 Moving violations;

· 3 Insurance related violations; and

· 16 other Highway Traffic Act charges.

Reminder

Over the past ten years (2005 to 2014), 856 people have died in road crashes in which not wearing a seat belt was a causal factor in their deaths. More than two thirds of the deceased were males (646) and 210 were females. The majority of those who died were drivers (611) and 245 were passengers.
