(Ottawa, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Ottawa Detachment has charged a driver after an incident on Highway 417 eastbound near Parkdale Avenue.
On April 27, 2015, at approximately 12:41 am, an officer observed a motor vehicle approaching an OPP cruiser from behind traveling in excess of 150 kph. The motor vehicle passed the cruiser with no rear lights on. The officer subsequently conducted a traffic stop, which resulted in the driver being arrested.
The female driver, 26 year old Sasha RUHS of Ottawa was charged with:
Race a motor vehicle contrary to section 172(1) of The Highway Traffic Act.
Driving While Ability Impaired contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code; and
Driving with More than 80 mgs. of Alcohol in Blood contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.
The female driver is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice, Ottawa on June 4, 2015.
The OPP is asking that if you suspect that someone is driving or about to drive impaired, call 9-1-1 and report it. If you see that someone is impaired by alcohol or other drugs and intends on driving, strongly discourage them from driving and call 9-1-1 if they insist.
What are the penalties for driving 50 kph. over the speed limit?
Pre-conviction – Immediate 7-day licence suspension and 7-day vehicle Impoundment;
Upon conviction – $2,000 to $10,000 fine, 6 demerit points, up to 6 months jail, up to 2 years licence suspension for a first conviction; and
Second offence – Driver licence suspension up to 10 years within 10 years of first conviction.
