NOISY VEHICLES

(Hawkesbury, ON) With the arrival of the warmer weather, the Hawkesbury OPP Detachment has received many complaints regarding vehicles that emit noise levels that do not conform to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. This problem contributes negatively on the quality of life for a majority of citizens.

Section 75 of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (HTA) stipulates:

“Every motor vehicle (which include motorcycles) or motor assisted bicycle shall be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise and excessive smoke, and no person shall use a muffler cut-out, straight exhaust, gutted muffler, Hollywood muffler, by-pass or similar device upon a motor vehicle or motor assisted bicycle. ”

This summer, officers will be on the lookout for vehicles that infringe the law. Those found in contravention of section 75 of the HTA may be subjected to a fine totalling $110.00 and will be required to make adjustments to their vehicles in order to meet the provincial standards.

CALLER ID SPOOFING

(Hawkesbury, ON) The Hawkesbury OPP received complaints from local residents regarding “Caller ID Spoofing”. The homeowners advised their own phone number was displayed on their caller ID when receiving a call from a telemarketer.

Caller ID is a useful function that allows you to see information on the identity and number of the caller before answering the call. Some telemarketers will mask or falsify this information. This practice is called “spoofing” and is an indication the call may not be legitimate.

A spoofed number can appear as a string of digits such as 000-000-0000 or 123-456-7890, a random number or another company or person’s real number.

If you receive a telemarketing call from a person or a company that you believe has spoofed the caller id, you can file a complaint by going to the National DNCL website at https://www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/ or call toll-free 1-866-580-DNCL (1-866-580-3625). If you are calling from a TTY device, call 1-888-DNCL-TTY (1-888-362-5889).

If you are complaining about fraudulent calls or a spoofing incident you can also report the calls to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

OPP AUXILIARY OFFICERS PERFORM PARKING LOT INSPECTIONS

(Hawkesbury, ON) The Hawkesbury detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police regularly receives reports of thefts from motor vehicles and mischief. In most cases, the investigations reveal that the victims had left their vehicle doors unlocked.

To help prevent such crimes, the Hawkesbury OPP Auxiliary Unit performed crime prevention inspections in the parking lots of the County Road 17 businesses in Hawkesbury on May 7th.

The inspections consisted of verifications of vehicles for unlocked doors, keys in the ignition, having valuables in plain view, etc. After each “Risk Inspection”, the Auxiliaries left a summary of the said inspection on the vehicle. Giving the owner feedback on some of the risk factors associated with the vehicle and important contact information if more explanations are needed.

The OPP Auxiliary Officers were able to verify a total of 113 vehicles. It was found that 37 vehicles were found to be a risk factor. (33%)

These inspections were done on commercial properties where car owners are usually more careful and crime savvy compared to parking on their own property.

Police need everyone’s help in fighting crime. Everyone must do their part and this starts with securing your own property. Remember the “Crime Triangle”. For a crime to occur we need a “criminal”, an “opportunity” and a “victim”. If potential victims take away the “opportunities” given to criminals this will translate in fewer crimes committed and lesser victims. Please help us make a difference.
