(WEST PARRY SOUND, ON) – On June 19, 2015 the West Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended two motor vehicle collisions involving cyclists. At approximately 7:53 a.m. a cyclist collided with the side of a car at the intersection of James Street and Seguin Street in Parry Sound. Then at approximately 2:21 p.m. a cyclist drove in front of a car at the intersection of Isabella Street and Church Street in Parry Sound. In both cases the cyclist was at fault and was charged with Cyclist ride in or along crosswalk.
The OPP would like to remind cyclist that a bicycle is a vehicle under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (HTA). This means that, as a bicyclist, you have the same rights and responsibilities to obey all traffic laws as other road users. Be aware of local bylaws regarding riding on the sidewalk as this may not be permitted in your community. Also get off your bike when using a crosswalk at a controlled intersection. When riding on the street, ride as close to the right side of the road a safely possible. Generally 1 metre is the rule of thumb. You should allow yourself enough room to move to the right without hitting the curb if a vehicle crowds you.
Everyone is reminded to obey all the signs and traffic signals. Stops signs, traffic lights have to be obeyed just like a vehicle. Cyclists have to stop for schools buses just like vehicles. This can only be safe if ALL TRAFFIC obey the rules of the road. It is the law in Ontario – Every cyclist under the age of 18 must wear an approved bicycle helmet.
