Renfrew OPP Weekly News

(RENFREW, ON) – The Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated 222 calls for service during the past week.

Domestic Disputes

Police responded to seven calls regarding domestic violence in the past week. One female was charged with assault, domestic mischief and two counts of failing to comply with a recognizance, and one male was charged with assault, domestic mischief, uttering threats, two counts of failing to comply with a recognizance and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order. No other criminal offences occurred. If police are called to investigate during or after a domestic dispute and discover a criminal offence has occurred they will lay charges. Warnings are never considered for cases involving domestic violence.

Impaired Driver

Police responded to a two vehicle collision in Arnprior on Thursday June 18 shortly after 8pm. The collision on Madawaska Blvd at Bridge Street happened when a vehicle stopped at a red light was rear ended by another vehicle. One male driver was arrested at the scene for impaired driving. Following breath tests at the detachment Lucas WHEELER 20, of Arnprior was charged with impaired driving, driving over 80mgs and dangerous driving. He was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on July 22. The collision was investigated by Provincial Constable Jodi Burns.

Traffic Enforcement

On the 15th of June 2015, members of the East Region OPP Highway Safety Division conducted traffic enforcement on Highway 17 in Renfrew County. Officers issued 19 speeding charges, 4 seatbelt charges, and 1 expired vehicle permit charge.

A 41-year old Pembroke man was stopped for speeding 156 km/h in a 90 km/h zone. Michael SCHURM 41 of Pembroke was issued a summons to appear in court in Renfrew on July 17. He was charged with Stunt Driving contrary to the Highway Traffic Act and his licence was suspended for 7 days. His vehicle was also impounded for a period of 7 days. Sergeant Derek McLeod investigated.

An Ottawa man was stopped for a seatbelt violation on June 15 at 8:20pm in Cobden. His driver’s licence was determined to be suspended for unpaid fines and was charged under the Highway Traffic Act. Anthony COMMANDA 2 of Ottawa was served a summons to appear in court in Renfrew on July 31. Provincial Constable Ben Sidney investigated.

The OPP will continue to maintain a high level of visibility on area highways and our officers are committed to enforcing the “Big 4” causal factors in motor vehicle collisions, which include the lack of occupant restraint, impaired driving, distracted driving, and aggressive driving.

Theft

A lawnmower was reported stolen from a shed on Lorne Avenue in Renfrew. There is a suspect and Provincial Constable Tony Gardiner is investigating.

A vehicle was entered overnight on June 20 on Raglan Street N in Renfrew and a wallet, cash, and an IPod were stolen. The vehicle was locked, and evidence suggests wire was used to unlock the vehicle. The investigation is continuing.

A 1977 Elan Snowmobile was stolen from a residence in Cobden. The snow machine was stolen during the past week, and was put into a pick-up truck to be removed.
