ALPR Results In Arrests

(CALEDON, ON) – On September 18th, 2015 at approximately 11:25 pm, officers from the Caledon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were monitoring traffic on the Forks of the Credit Road with the ALPR (Automatic Licence Plate Recognition) vehicle. The OPP was the first police service in Ontario and one of the first in Canada to target suspended drivers and stolen vehicles with their ALPR. This vehicle provides the operator with information in relation to stolen vehicle and suspended drivers, etc.

While checking traffic, the ALPR recognized a stolen vehicle from the Brampton area. The officers activated the vehicle’s emergency equipment and the driver of the motor vehicle attempted to flee from police by reversing the vehicle and subsequently struck a fence. Three of the occupants remained inside the vehicle while one occupant fled on foot. Within minutes, a resident reported the theft of their vehicle, a white Volkswagen. Throughout our investigation, the OPP successfully identified the fleeing male’s identity and learned that he is a resident of Peel. With the assistance from the Peel Regional Police Service, officers attended the suspect’s residence and located the suspect and the stolen Volkswagen.

In conclusion, three 20 year old persons from Brampton, Brandon PERSAD, Danielle WONHAM and Terrell K. LEWIS were arrested and charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000.00.

Joseph POLAND, 20, from Mississauga was arrested and charged with Theft Over $5,000.00 and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000.00.
