WFP has received several emails this past week regarding the Wingham police total media blackout. As hundreds of thousands of you now know, Wingham is the highest taxed town in Ontario, mainly due to the extremely high policing costs. Despite Wingham’s rich history of communication technologies, we are still left in the dark by those in charge. It costs them nothing to keep you informed, they simply choose to keep you in the dark so you have no reason or ability to question anything. Just keep your mouth shut, don’t ask any questions and pay the highest taxes in Ontario. That’s their version of Open Government and Fairness. It should be noted that town staff take about 120% of the money raised by taxation for themselves, if that is not of great concern to you, you have math or morality issues.
Years ago when WFP first broadcast our tax rate, the CAO of the day was furious. He felt the tax rate broadcast on WFP was scaring away families and investors. The CAO believed people didn’t need to know how bad the taxes are, and they would find out eventually anyway. This was right around the time he was selling his Wingham home, before resigning and leaving Wingham. Now we seem to go through a CAO every few months, each one apparently too terrified of town staff to do anything to fix our Community.
WFP’s first battle was to get town council to post their North Huron.ca email addresses online so the Public could contact them. Council flatly refused many polite requests for this, and an 8 month battle ensued to pressure them until they capitulated and posted the email addresses on the website. A concurrent battle was to get the Wingham police and town hall to start issuing press releases to inform the Public, this too was met with massive resistance from council and the current chief of police Tim Poole. A compromise at the time was the police chief would start keeping the Public informed via FaceBook, not real press releases like a non-mall-cop” police force. It has been over 2 months since they have posted anything!
