(MIDDLESEX COUNTY, ON) – The Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid a criminal charge against a young person, following an altercation during a hockey game.
Police were contacted in December 2015, regarding a player who allegedly came up behind another player and struck them in the helmet with a hockey stick. There were no injuries reported.
The police investigation has revealed that the assault was intentional, and unrelated to the play in the game.
As a result, a male youth has been charged with assault with a weapon, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada. The youth cannot be identified, as per provisions in the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA).
The Middlesex County OPP reminds players to conduct themselves properly while engaged in sport, and in accordance with their league’s code of conduct policies. If exhibited behaviour meets the threshold of a criminal offence, in addition to respective league disciplinary actions, the player may face charges under the Criminal Code of Canada.
