(COLLINGWOOD, ON) Officers from Collingwood and The Blue Mountains detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested and charged two males on Sunday after a vehicle failed to stop for police.
On Sunday January 31 2016 at approximately 3:00pm an officer from the Collingwood/The Blue Mountains OPP Traffic Unit was conducting radar enforcement in the area of Highway 26 and Poplar Side Road. The officer subsequently observed a speeding vehicle and directed the car to stop where the driver was given instructions to park off the roadway for police to speak to him. It was at this point that the driver sped off and in the process hit the officer with the vehicle’s side mirror. In his haste to flee the area, the driver eventually went off the roadway near the intersection of Beachwood Road and Churchill Court where both occupants of the vehicle fled on foot.
Officers arrived on scene and were alerted a short time later by the Orillia Provincial Communications Centre, in regards to suspicious males in the area called in by a neighbourhood resident. The resident was reporting that two males had come to his residence asking him to call a taxi to pick them up. The males we arrested a short time later.
Charged are 20 year-old Mohammad HABIBNIA of Richmond Hill, he is facing criminal charges of (two counts) of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, assault a peace officer with a weapon, take motor vehicle without consent and fail to comply with probation order. He is also facing a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act charge of possession of cannabis marihuana under 30 grams. As well, he is facing several Highway Traffic Act charges of speeding, fail to report accident, fail to stop for police and permit operation of unsafe vehicle. He was held for bail in the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie.
Also charged is 22 year-old Daniel GHASSEMI of Richmond Hill, he is facing a criminal charge of occupant of motor vehicle taken without consent and possession of marihuana under 30 grams. He is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Collingwood on March 1 2016.
The involved officer did not suffer any injuries as a result of the incident.
