(RENFREW, ON) – The Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated 218 calls for service during the previous week, including domestic disputes, thefts and frauds.
Domestic Disputes
Renfrew OPP officers responded to 11 domestic disputes during the past week. One female was charged with fail to comply with an undertaking, assault and uttering a threat; one male was charged with mischief; and one female was charged with assault. No other criminal offences occurred.
Stolen Vehicle Recovered
A vehicle stolen in Quebec last week was recovered in Cobden and one male is facing charges. Police responded on Thursday February 4 when a suspicious male was asking questions at a business in Cobden. A licence plate number was given to police and the vehicle and male were located in a parking lot on Pembroke St at 11:17am. The vehicle, a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta had been stolen in Montreal the previous day. Jeremy HOWE 39 of no fixed address was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property over $5000, and breach of a recognizance. He was held in custody for a bail hearing on February 5. Provincial Constable Jeff Smith of the Provincial Traffic Management and RIDE Unit led the investigation.
Stunt Driver Charged
On Thursday February 4 Provincial Constable Patrick O’Connor and Sergeant Derek McLeod were conducting radar speed enforcement on Highway 17 near Renfrew. A pick-up truck was observed travelling westbound near Bruce St. The vehicle was speeding and caught on radar in excess of 50 km/hr over the 90km/hr posted speed limit. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle but it turned onto Storyland Road and continued travelling at a high rate of speed. Once the licence plate was obtained the officers stopped. As a result of the ensuing investigation Justin SULLIVAN 29 of Deep River was arrested on February 6 in Chalk River. He was held in custody for a bail hearing on February 8 charged with racing a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police, and flight from police while being pursued.
Vehicle Stolen and Recovered
A vehicle was stolen in Arnprior overnight on February 2. The truck a 2011 dark grey Ford Ranger was parked in a driveway on Allan Drive and was last seen at 10 pm on Monday night. On Tuesday morning the truck was gone. The vehicle was recovered in Robert Simpson Park on Thursday February 4 at 7:40 pm. The vehicle was driven off the hill in the park and located upside down. Two teenaged males were seen walking away from the area. Provincial Constable David Ladd is continuing to investigate.
Shoplifters Warned
Two cases involving teenagers shoplifting resulted in warnings being issued. On Tuesday February 2 at 11 am a 16-year-old male youth was observed stealing from a convenience store in Renfrew. He was detained and police were called. The manager requested the youth be warned. He was turned over to his parents and warned for stealing. Provincial Constable Dallas MacLeod investigated.
On February 4 at approx. 7 pm officers were called to a drug store in Arnprior after three teenaged girls were observed stealing and fled the store. They left behind several backpacks. The females were located. Stolen property was returned to the drug store as well as several other stores in Arnprior. The 12, 13 and 14 year old females were warned for stealing and turned over to their parents. Provincial Constable David Ladd investigated.
Indecent Act
Police are investigating after a male drove through a fast food drive through and exposed himself to staff. This occurred in Arnprior on Sunday February 7 at 11:14 pm. Officers are viewing surveillance footage in attempts to identify the vehicle and male driver. This type of action is the criminal offence of committing an indecent act and charges can be laid when people do this. Provincial Constable Jodi Burns is investigating.
Police are also investigating after a teenage victim reported receiving unwanted cell phone pictures from a former classmate. The pictures are of a sexual nature and might constitute the offence of committing an indecent act. Provincial Constable Cory Briscoe is investigating.
Protect Yourself from Fraud
Calls are continuing from fraudsters attempting to trick people into forwarding funds. The most common fraud currently circulating are callers pretending to be from the Canada Revenue Agency. If you receive a call and suspect it to be a fraudster contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. The Canada Revenue Agency does not call taxpayers and demand payment. They do not have the authority to send the police to arrest you, which is one claim the fraudsters make in attempts to intimidate you. Protect yourself from phone frauds. Don’t give personal information over the phone, don’t allow people to have access to your computer, and don’t provide banking or credit card information to callers.
