(MIDDLESEX COUNTY, ON) – On February 3, 2016, at approximately 7:36 a.m., the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed northbound on Prospect Hill Road, near Elginfield Road, in the Municipality of Middlesex Centre.
The vehicle, a black Chevrolet car, was measured to be travelling in excess of 50 kilometers per hour (km/h) over the 80 km/hr speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a 22-year-old male from West Elgin, Ontario, has been charged with race a motor vehicle, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).
On February 4, 2016, at approximately 12:35 a.m., the Middlesex County OPP observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Highway 402, near Glendon Drive, in the Municipality of Strathroy Caradoc, Ontario.
The vehicle, a black Volkswagen car, was measured to be travelling in excess of 50 km/r over the 100 km/h speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a 21-year-old female from London, Ontario, has been charged with race a motor vehicle, contrary to the HTA.
Both drivers’ vehicles were seized, and their driver’s licences suspended, for 7 days.
The Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) Driver’s Handbook states: “The risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost five times greater for vehicles crashing at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit on a highway with a posted limit of 100 km/h. The increase in risk is even greater on roads with lower posted limits. For example, on roads with a posted limit of 60 km/h or less, the risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost eight times greater for vehicles colliding at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit.”
