Police Issue Door-to-Door Scam Warning

(TOWN OF PENETANGUISHENE, ON) – Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating a door to door scam in Penetanguishene, ON after concerned citizens contacted the police.

On March 14 and March 17, 2016 during the day, citizens from two separate residences in Penetanguishene reported that two males came to their door claiming to be contracted from the Town of Penetanguishene. They were there to inspect water pipes for calcium build up. The water inspections were free and they worked for Canada Home Service. The males are white, late 20’s, wearing fluorescent construction jackets and had lanyards with some form of I.D badge.

Police would like to remind residents that they do not have to let anyone in their home who is pressuring or trying to sell a product or do any type of inspection. These people may make it sound urgent in order to sell you something or get inside your home.

The following are safety tips to prevent you from falling victim to these scammers:

Ask to see the company identification, if they fail to provide it ask them to leave and if they don’t call your local police service.

Warn your neighbors about them after they leave. Remember do not let them in your home.

Don’t be pressured by any urgency to act on their scam. Always check the source of the information to confirm if it is legitimate before acting on anything.

Tell a family or trusted friend for advice.
