Two Deceased In Vehicle Vs Train Collision

(SOUTHWEST MIDDLESEX, ON) – The Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are currently on the scene of a fatal collision involving a passenger train and a motor vehicle, which occurred at approximately 10:37 a.m.

A VIA passenger train, with approximately 80 passengers on board, was travelling eastbound on the rail road tracks. A grey Ford car was travelling southbound on Melbourne Road. The vehicles collided at the rail crossing. The car is in the north side ditch, east of Melbourne Road, and the train stopped east of the crossing. The crossing is governed by wig wag lights, but not crossing arms.

The two occupants in the car are deceased. One passenger on the train suffered minor injuries, but did not require medical attention.

The Strathroy Caradoc Fire Department, the Middlesex London Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the Strathroy Caradoc Police Service, and the CN Police also responded to the call.

The OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) are attending the scene to assist with the investigation.

As a result, Melbourne Road is closed between Parkhouse Drive and Glendon Drive. The roadways are expected to be closed for a number of hours. Motorists will need to find alternative routes.

This investigation is in its early stages. An update will be released when information becomes available.
