Both Deceased Identified In Train Vs Car Collision

(SOUTHWEST MIDDLESEX, ON) – The Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended the scene of a fatal collision involving a passenger train and a motor vehicle, which occurred at approximately 10:37 a.m. on April 4, 2016.

A VIA passenger train, with approximately 80 passengers on board, was travelling eastbound on the rail road tracks. A grey Ford car was travelling southbound on Melbourne Road. The vehicles collided at the rail crossing. The car came to rest in the north side ditch, east of Melbourne Road, and the train stopped east of the crossing. The crossing is governed by wig wag lights, but not crossing arms.

The two occupants of the car, a 39-year-old female driver, Eunhwa AHN, and the 37-year-old female passenger, Gyujin SHON, both from Strathroy Caradoc, Ontario, were pronounced dead at the scene.

One passenger on the train suffered minor injuries, but did not require medical attention. The train was able to leave the area at approximately 3:15 p.m. continuing to its original destination.

The Strathroy Caradoc Fire Department, the Middlesex London Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the Strathroy Caradoc Police Service, and the CN Police also responded to the call.

The OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

Melbourne Road, between Parkhouse Drive and Glendon Drive was closed for the investigation. It has since been re-opened.

This incident is still under investigation.
