(CITY OF TEMISKAMING SHORES, ON) – On April 9, 2015 at approximately 7:25 p.m., members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attempted to stop a vehicle for stunt driving on Highway 11, Haileybury. The vehicle failed to stop and fled from police.
Shortly before 10:00 p.m. police located the same vehicle travelling erratically on Highway 65 West, Cane Township. Police initiated a traffic stop and the suspect again fled from police. A spike belt was successfully deployed and the male driver was apprehended. He was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and then released. During the incident, two police vehicles received moderate damage when they were struck by the suspect vehicle. No officers were injured.
As a result of this investigation, 43- year old Geoffrey TYLER from Elk Lake, Ontario, is facing the following charges:
Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle – section 249(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC)
Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer – section 249.1(1) of the CC
Mischief Under $5000 – section 430(4) of the CC (2 counts)
Resist Peace Officer – section 129(a) of the CC
Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 – section 354(1)(a) CC (3 counts)
Possession Break In Instruments – section 351(1) of the CC
Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon – section 270.01(1)(a) of the CC (2 counts)
Fail to Comply with Probation Order – section 733.1(1) of the CC (2 counts)
Fail to Comply with Recognizance – section 145(3) of the CC
Fail to Stop for Police – section 216 of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
Careless Driving – section 130 of the HTA
Driving While Under Suspension – section 53(1) of the HTA
Possess Illegal Licence – section 35(1)(a) of the HTA
Use Plate Not Authorized for Vehicle – section 12(1)(d) of the HTA
He is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing in the Ontario Court of Justice in Haileybury on April 15, 2016.
