Speeder From Grand Bend Facing Drunk Driving Charge – Name Released

(BLUEWATER, ON) – A traffic stop last night has led to a number of charges being laid against a driver from Grand Bend. At approximately 9:36 p.m. on June 7, 2016 a Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer observed a Dodge Caravan travelling westbound on Dashwood Road at a high rate of speed. The officer used a RADAR device to measure the vehicle’s speed and a speed reading of 120 km/h in the 90km/h zone was obtained.

A traffic stop was initiated and the officer spoke with the driver. Upon speaking with the driver the officer noted the smell of alcohol coming from the driver. A roadside screening test was completed and the driver registered a fail. He was then placed under arrest for Driving a Motor Vehicle With Over 80 Milligrams of Alcohol. A partial bottle of liquor was also found inside the van. The driver was transported to the Exeter OPP Detachment for breath tests whereupon he provided two samples of his breath to a qualified Intoxilizer Technician. Both of his samples registered over the legal limit.

As a result, 35-year-old Damion WILLERT from Grand Bend has been charged with Drive Motor Vehicle – Over 80 Milligrams of Alcohol, Speeding and Drive Motor Vehicle with Open Container of Liquor. He was released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for July 11, 2016 at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich. He also received an automatic 90-day driver’s licence suspension and his vehicle will be impounded for seven days.
