3 Collisions In Perth South In 5 Days

(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH SOUTH, ON) – Within a period of five days the Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has investigated three collisions within the Township of Perth South. All of these collisions have many striking similarities that may want us all to re-examine our driving.

Crash similarities:

-All three collisions were within busy intersections.

-All intersections had the non-through highway controlled by a stop sign.

-All through highways had a speed limit of 80 km/h.

-All crashes occurred during daylight hours.

-All crashes occurred while road and weather conditions were ideal.

-All crashes resulted in injuries (fortunately they were all minor in nature, were treated at local hospitals).

-All crashes had the potential to be fatal collisions.

-All at fault drivers were charged with “fail to yield to traffic on through highway”.

The first of the three collisions occurred on Tuesday July 12, 2016, at approximately 1 p.m. A Volvo tractor trailer was driving southbound on Perth Road 113, when the driver drove into the intersection of Perth Line 26, failing to yield to a westbound Mack tractor trailer on Perth Line 26. The collision of the two trucks resulted in extensive damage to both vehicles and a minor diesel fuel spill which all resulted in a three hour road closure of Perth Line 26 between Perth Road 112 and Hwy 7. The 46-year-old male driver of the Volvo a Mississauga resident was charged. The 69-year-old male passenger of the Volvo a Mississauga resident was uninjured. The 61-year-old driver of the Mack tractor trailer, a Zurich resident sustained minimal injuries.

The second of the three collisions took place on Saturday, July 16, 2016, around 9:15 a.m., at the intersection of Cobble Hills Road and Hwy 7 (South of St.Marys). A Toyota Highlander SUV was northbound on Cobble Hills road and crossed Hwy 7 directly in the path of a westbound Toyota Camry. (The Camry T-boned the Highlander.) The 29-year-old female driver of the Highlander, a Sudbury resident, was uninjured, however she has been charged. The 72-year-old male driver of the Camry and his 56-year-old female passenger, both residents of London were transported to hospital.

The third of the three collisions also occurred on Saturday, July 16, 2016, shortly after 11:30 a.m., at the intersection of Perth Road 113 and Line 29 (South of Stratford). A Mitsubishi Outlander SUV was travelling westbound on Line 29 when it crossed Perth Road 113 in the path of a southbound GMC Terrain SUV. The impact caused the Outlander to flip onto its driver’s side trapping the four occupants. The Perth East Fire Department attended to extricate the occupants. Two of the four occupants sustained injuries and so did the 46-year-old male driver of the Terrain, a resident of the Township of Perth East. The 42-year-old female driver of the Outlander, a North York resident has been charged.driver of the GMC Terrain has been charged.

The OPP urges motorists to pay attention to, and obey stop signs at stop sign controlled intersections. Remember intersections are locations where large numbers of serious and fatal collisions occur. Remember to STOP AND LOOK!
