(CENTRAL ELGIN, ON) – On July 23, 2016, at approximately 4:44 p.m., the Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Central Elgin Fire Services, and the Elgin St. Thomas Emergency Medical Services (EMS), responded to a motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles, which sent nine people to hospital.
A silver Hyundai car travelling eastbound on Ron McNeil Line, and a green Ford van travelling northbound on Belmont Road, collided in the intersection. Ron McNeil Line is governed by stop signs.
All of the occupants of the car were from Port Hope, Ontario. The driver, a 31-year-old female, and three of the children (two 12-year-old females, and a 5-year-old male) were transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injures, and subsequently discharged.
A fourth child, a 7-year-old female, was transported to hospital by ambulance with possible life threatening injuries. She currently remains in hospital, but her injuries have been determined to be non-life threatening.
The driver of the van, a 26-year-old female from Cambridge, Ontario, and her three passengers (a 7-year-old male from Cambridge, a 34-year-old female from Barrie, Ontario, and 7-year-old male from Barrie, Ontario) were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and discharged.
OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) did not attend the scene, but portions of Belmont Road and Ron McNeil Line were closed until approximately 9:15 p.m., for investigative purposes and vehicle removal.
As a result of the police investigation, the driver of the car has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) with careless driving.
