(MIDDLESEX COUNTY, ON) – Six motor vehicle drivers have been charged in four days, with race a motor vehicle – excessive speed, under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).
On July 22, 2016, at approximately 7:54 p.m., the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Egremont Road, near Komoka Road, in Middlesex Centre, Ontario. The vehicle, a black Yamaha motor cycle, was measured to be travelling in excess of 75 kilometers per hour (km/hr) over the 90 km/hr speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a 30-year-old male from London, Ontario, was charged.
On July 23, 2016, at approximately 3:36 a.m., the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Richmond Street, near Medway Road, in Middlesex Centre, Ontario. The vehicle, a black Hyundai car, was measured to be travelling in excess of 65 km/hr over the 60 km/hr speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a 33-year-old male from London, Ontario, was charged.
On July 24, 2016, at approximately 7:58 a.m., the OPP Highway Safety Division (HSD) observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Westchester Bourne, near Harrietsville Drive, in Thames Centre, Ontario. The vehicle, a black Ford pickup truck, was measured to be travelling 50 km/hr over the 80 km/hr speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a 21-year-old male from Central Elgin, Ontario, was charged.
On July 24, 2016, at approximately 1:29 p.m., the Middlesex County OPP observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Plover Mills Road, between Clarke Road and Prospect Hill Road, in Middlesex Centre, Ontario. The vehicle, a black Ford car, was measured to be travelling in excess of 50 km/hr over the 80 km/hr speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a 28-year-old male from Kitchener, Ontario, was charged.
On July 24, 2016, at approximately 2:04 p.m., the OPP HSD observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Medway Road, between Clarke Road and Olalondo Road, in Middlesex Centre, Ontario. The vehicle, a black Suzuki motor cycle, was measured to be travelling in excess of 50 km/hr over the speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a 29-year-old male from London, Ontario, was charged.
On July 25, 2016, at approximately 9:28 p.m., the Middlesex County OPP observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Littlewood Road, near Woodhull Road, in Middlesex Centre, Ontario. The vehicle, a silver Harley Davidson motor cycle, was measured to be travelling in excess of 50 km/hr over the 80 km/hr speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a 46-year-old male from London, Ontario, was charged.
The drivers’ vehicles were seized, and their driver’s licence was suspended for 7 days.
The Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) Driver’s Handbook states: “The risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost five times greater for vehicles crashing at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit on a highway with a posted limit of 100 km/h. The increase in risk is even greater on roads with lower posted limits. For example, on roads with a posted limit of 60 km/h or less, the risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost eight times greater for vehicles colliding at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit.”
