(HURON COUNTY, ON) – As evidenced by five recent Racing charges laid by Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) some drivers just aren’t heeding the message to slow down. What is going to take for some to change their risky behavior and start driving below the posted speed limit?
On August 25th, 2016 at 10:44 a.m. a Huron OPP officer spotted a Chevrolet Equinox travelling eastbound on Harriston Road at Belmore Line at a very high rate of speed. The speed of the vehicle was measured with a RADAR device at 122 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone. 21-year-old Nicole BUDGELL from Cambridge will have to attend court on September 20, 2016 to answer to her Racing charge.
On August 26th, 2016 just after 9:00 a.m. a Huron OPP officer observed a Chevrolet Corvette travelling southbound on Airport Line near Dashwood Road at a high rate of speed. The speed of the Corvette was measured at a rate of speed of 141 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. A traffic stop ensued and the 62-year-old driver, William KRAFT from Grand Bend was charged with Racing. He is scheduled to attend court on October 4, 2016 to answer to his charge.
On August 27th, 2016 at 12:43 p.m. a Huron OPP officer observed a Honda Civic speeding westbound on Dashwood Road near Ausable Line at a high rate of speed. The speed of the Civic was locked at a high of 141 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone. The vehicle was stopped and the 21-year-old driver, Mohammad YOUSUF from Mississauga was charged with Racing. His court date has been scheduled for October 4, 2016.
Also on August 27th, 2016 at 4:05 p.m. a Huron OPP officer spotted a Nissan Altima travelling eastbound on Amberley Road near Division Line at a high rate of speed. The officer measured the speed of the vehicle with a RADAR device and locked the speed of the Altima at a high speed of 140 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. A traffic stop was conducted and the 22-year-old driver, Jessica MCALLISTER from Brantford was charged with Racing. Her court date has been set for October 4, 2016.
On Sunday, August 28th at 9:45 a.m. a GMC Sierra was spotted speeding eastbound on Dashwood Road. The officer confirmed the speed of the vehicle with a RADAR device and measured the speed at a high of 143 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone. 19-year-old, Zachary BRINTNELL from Exeter has been charged with Racing. He will be making a trip to court on October 4, 2016 to answer to his charge.
Huron County OPP would like to remind drivers that choose to drive at dangerous speeds on our public roadways. Know this: The risk of dying or sustaining a life-altering injury is nearly five times greater when travelling at speeds of 50 km/h over the speed limit. Unfortunately, it seems some drivers are willing to jeopardize everyone’s safety by ignoring these risks. So, if you want to chance it, be warned the penalties are significant.
An immediate seven-day licence suspension and seven-day vehicle impoundment at roadside.
If convicted:
Fines from $2,000 to $10,000
Courts can impose a driver’s licence suspension of up to 10 years for a second conviction within 10 years
The accumulation of six demerit points, a maximum licence suspension of two years for a first conviction and a maximum six months in jail.
Increased insurance premiums
“There is absolutely zero tolerance for driving at some of the speeds we have seen lately on our roads. Doubling the speed limit in some cases and exceeding it by 50, 60 and 70 km/h is simply inexcusable. The penalties are significant so be prepared to leave that traffic stop with a court date and the immediate loss of your driving privileges and vehicle.”
