Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with 287 incidents over this four day period, here are some examples:

Sept 12:

Police attended the Northumberland Hills hospital and arrested a 34 yr old Aurora man for aggravated assault at the request of York Regional Police Service (YRPS). He was turned over to YRPS to face charges in relation to an incident that occurred in their jurisdiction.

A Colborne business on County Rd 25 reported the theft of 600 feet of copper wire from a trailer sometime overnight

An auto business on Dale Rd in Hamilton Twp reported a break-in that occurred overnight. Money and a small die cast orange coloured 1968 Camero replica were taken

A blue Pontiac was measured to be traveling 169km/h on Hwy 401 in the Port Hope area. A 24 yr old Castleton man was charged with Stunt Driving – Excessive Speed. His licence and car were seized for a seven day period

Sept 13:

A motorist on Hwy 401 reported being confused by construction traffic cones in the Brighton area. An officer patrolled the zone and found everything appeared safe.

A Port Hope senior advised police that he received a letter from England notifying him that he was entitled to large inheritance. He correctly recognized this as a scam and was given the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre phone number 1-888-495-8501 who records current frauds such as this.

A utility contacted police when a client of theirs threatened self-harm due to the service being disconnected. Police attended and assisted the Alnwick-Haldimand Twp resident in getting treatment for her mental health well-being.

Sept 14:

Theft of 12 custom clear tarps valued at $10,000 reported stolen sometime over the past two days from a youth camp on Lakeshore Rd in the Grafton area.

The operator of a vegetable stand on Oak Ridges Dr in Hamilton Twp reported the theft of money from his cash box which is on the honour system. A black Dodge Charger was seen in the area and the investigation is ongoing.

The owner of a home for sale on Burnham St North in Hamilton Twp reported finding a trespasser ‘passed out’ in the home after an ‘open house’ event. Officers transported the female to a hospital for treatment with her mental health issues and alcohol consumption.

Several resources were utilized on Hwy 401 for a fatal collision investigation in the Colborne area.(see full release)

Sept 15:

A Brighton resident reported sending $5,000 to a person she had met online. That individual, claiming to be from Nigeria, stated that he needed the funds for his daughter who required brain surgery. She discontinued communicating with him as he repeatedly asked for more money. Fraudulent transfers into her account as ‘payment’ for the debt by this individual led to her bank putting a hold on her account. The investigation by both police and bank officials is ongoing.

A homeowner on George St Campbellford reported a break-in that occurred between 5:30am – 3:00pm today. The culprit(s) entered the house through an unlocked front door taking an Xbox 360 with cords/two controllers and 3 games (NHL 2015, PGA Golf, NFL 2011) plus a red/white 1500watt generator.

A homeowner on Percy Boom Rd in Seymour Twp reported an intruder in her house shortly after she arrived home. The suspect, who entered the home through an unlocked and open rear sliding door, fled the residence upon being discovered. OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT), Canine and detachment officers conducted a search of the surrounding area but were unable to locate the suspect. The resident was uninjured and nothing was apparently taken.

**Northumberland OPP officers also investigated nine accidental 911 calls, eight motor vehicle collisions, 42 traffic related complaints and conducted two RIDE programs during this time period.
