East Algoma OPP Press Releases

(BLIND RIVER ON)- On October 7, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on general patrol duties in the Town of Blind River.

Shortly after 11:00 a.m., police observed a westbound vehicle on Causley Street and conducted a traffic stop. Investigation determined the driver was suspended.

As a result, Stephan CHESTER, 52 years of age from Hamilton, Ontario was charged with:

Driving While Under Suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA); and

Class G1 Licence Holder –Unaccompanied by Qualified Driver contrary to section 5(1) of Ontario Regulation 340/94 HTA.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on December 7, 2016.

DRIVER CHARGED FOR USING HER CELL PHONE

(MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES, ON) – On October 9, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on general patrol duties on Highway 17, in the Municipality of Huron Shores west of Blind River.

Shortly before 4:00 p.m., police observed a female using her cell phone while driving on Highway 17. A traffic stop was initiated.

As a result, Priscilla SANTOS, 31 years of age from Winnipeg, Manitoba, was issued a provincial offence notice and charged with: Drive-Hold-Hand-Held Communication Device, contrary to section 78.1(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

DRIVER CHARGED WITH STUNT DRIVING

(BLIND RIVER ON)- On October 9, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on general patrol duties in the Town of Blind River.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., police observed an eastbound vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Causley Street. A traffic stop was initiated. Investigation revealed the driver did not have his licence on his person and did not have a permit for his vehicle.

As a result, Yi ZHAO, 33 years of age from Hannon, Ontario, was charged with:

Drive Motor Vehicle While Performing Stunt – +50 km/hr in a posted 50 km/hr zone, contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA);

Drive Motor Vehicle-No Permit, contrary to section 7(1)(a) of the HTA; and

Driver Fail to Surrender Licence, contrary to section 33(1) of the HTA.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on December 7, 2016.
