(ESPANOLA, ON)- On November 24, 2016, at approximately 4:44 p.m., members of the Espanola Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol on Highway 17 in the town of Webbwood, when officers observed a vehicle entering the highway from First Avenue almost causing a collision.
Officers noted that the windshield of the vehicle was covered with snow and the driver had zero visibility with the vehicle being operated in an erratic manner.
Police initiated a traffic stop and the investigation revealed the driver had been consuming alcohol, was a suspended driver and the vehicle he was operating was stolen.
Donald McALLISTER, 34 years of age, from Webbwood, was arrested and charged with the following:
Fail or refuse to provide breath sample, contrary to section 254(5) of the Criminal Code
Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, contrary to section 249(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
Theft of motor vehicle, contrary to section 333.1 of the Criminal Code
Driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act – 2 counts
Driver – Fail to properly wear seat belt, contrary to section 106(2) of the Highway Traffic Act
Windshield obstructed, contrary to section 73(1)(a) of the Highway Traffic Act
The accused driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days.
The accused will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury, on January 9, 2017 to answer to his charges.
The OPP is reminding motorists that there is no safe amount of alcohol or drug consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects a driver is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately.
