(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH EAST, ON) – On Wednesday March 09, 2016, around 8 p.m., an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was conducting speed enforcement on Line 34 (Hwy 7/8) near Road 102 (between Shakespeare and New Hamburg), when a fast moving east bound motor vehicle was observed.
The motor vehicle, a Lexus A25 was observed travelling at an extremely high rate of speed. The officer activated the police radar and locked the vehicle in at a speed of 136 km/h. This is 56 km/h above the posted 80 km/h zone.
The male driver of the Lexus, 48-year-old Stephen Wayne WITTAL of Kitchener was issued a summons for “race a motor vehicle”. He is to appear in Stratford Court on April 04, 2016 to answer to this charge. His driver’s licence was suspended for seven days and his vehicle was towed from the scene and has been impounded for a week.
Drivers who engage in high risk driving behavior put everyone at risk. Speeding makes it more difficult for drivers to react to changes, stop suddenly and control a vehicle. During inclement weather this task is even more difficult and more dangerous. In the case of a collision, the higher the speed the more severe the collision and the more likely that serious injuries or death will occur.
OPP would like to remind the motoring public to manage their time and respect all the rules of the road when travelling.
