(SOUTH BRUCE PENINSULA, ON) – On Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at approximately 11:19 a.m., a Bruce Peninsula Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was operating a marked OPP cruiser southbound on Hwy 6 towards Meadowland Rd. in the Township of South Bruce Peninsula when a 2002 Oldsmobile vehicle, travelling eastbound on Meadlowland Rd., entered the intersection at Hwy. 6, nearly colliding with the OPP cruiser.
The driver of the Oldsmobile proceeded to following the cruiser southbound on Hwy. 6; operating his vehicle in an erratic manner. Police pulled over, allowed the vehicle to pass and then proceeded to stop it. The driver was found to have been drinking alcohol. A part bottle of alcohol was observed inside his vehicle.
The driver was arrested for impaired driving. He was transported to the Bruce Peninsula OPP Detachment for breath tests. Test results indicated he had more than three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system.
Further investigation revealed he was a suspended driver.
William Joseph NICKELS, 31, of South Bruce Peninsula, is charged with impaired driving and over 80 milligrams. He is also charged with driving while under suspension and operating a motor vehicle without a valid permit under the Highway Traffic Act; as well as operating a motor vehicle with open liquor under the Liquor Licence Act.
He is scheduled to appear in court in Owen Sound on Thursday, August 14, 2014.
