Winter clearing of sidewalks is the number two complaint we receive
from our readers. What infuriates most Winghamites is the fact
that the town’s sidewalk snow blower spends as much time driving
down the middle of the road, as is it does clearing sidewalks.
The town has consistently refused requests from taxpayers to clear
our sidewalks in the winter. Some streets in town that are
lucky, have one sidewalk cleared on their street. The town’s
sidewalk snow blower will clear one side of the street, then drive
down the road rather than clear the sidewalk beside him/her.
The majority of children walking to school are forced to walk on the
road in the winter. Some are lucky and can jay-walk to a clear
sidewalk, so they can then safely proceed to school. It is
inevitable that someone is going to be injured by walking on snow
covered roads. While it is obviously inadvisable to walk on a
road in a snow storm, many have no option as they have to walk to
school, work or to the grocery store. This lack of winter
maintenance by the town opens up the town to potentially massive
lawsuits if someone is killed because the sidewalks were not
passable.
It takes approximately 30 seconds for them to clear one side of one
block. That is a mere 2 minutes to drive around a whole block
doing the sidewalk. There are approximately 45 blocks to clear
in Wingham. If they created a route he/she could follow
that meant minimal road driving, the whole town could be cleared in
90 minutes.
(45 Blocks X 2 Minutes = 90 Minutes)
While Councillors have stated that clearing the all the sidewalks
would raise taxes, WFP does not believe this. In fact,
several people have been told don’t worry about it
