At the packed meeting last night, Morris-Turnberry and North Huron
councils met to try and resolve their differences. The meeting
was chaired by Wayne Caldwell, which acted as an effective couples
councilor. Wayne started by getting each of the participants
to tell a humorous story from their childhood, regarding fire
service. Both councils laughed together. Most of the
stories were of local origin, which bluntly showed councilors that
we are one community, and the municipality’s boundary is not the
same as our community’s boundary. Mr. Caldwell made both
councils break into groups for a discussion, and made sure each
group had members of each side. This had both sides talking to
each other in a friendly manner, something which is unprecedented.
Hopefully both councils now view each other as equals, and the petty
bickering and emotional outbursts will have ended.
Wayne Caldwell did an excellent job, his positive influence on
the meeting can not be overstated! Caldwell displayed
more objectivity and leadership than Mayor Vincent has done during
the last 2 years. If Vincent had any leadership skills and an
ounce of objectivity, this fire debacle would have been resolved
over a year ago.
Morris-Turnberry had two proposals for resolving the fire
issue. The first option was for M-T to buy 50% of the fire
department, and be equal owners. The second option was to
continue paying for fire service from North Huron, but not what they
feel is a padded bill.
If both Councils pursue the joint ownership option, it could be the
first step toward amalgamation of Morris-Turnberry and North Huron.
