On Thursday, January 16, 2014, the London Police Service’s newest K9 member, Police Service Dog (PSD) Wilco, received his badge. Three shifts later, he made his first catch.
At approximately 1:10 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2014, a citizen called police after seeing two males acting suspiciously on Fanshawe Park Road East. When approached by the citizen, one male fled on foot and the other got into a vehicle and drove away.
It was determined that the males were attempting to remove rims from a semi-trailer.
Police located the vehicle that the suspect drove away in, a few addresses down the road, abandoned. In attendance were PSD Wilco, and his handler, Constable Marty Lessick. The driver of the vehicle was found hiding under a truck in the area. He was arrested at 1:55 a.m.
PSD Wilco then started another search, where he had run through a yard, jumped over a fence and located the second male hiding behind a vehicle, next to a house. This male was arrested at 2:10 a.m. – one hour after the citizen saw the men at the side of the trailer.
A 55-year-old London man and a 46-year-old Sarnia man have both been charged with five criminal offences each.
The London Police Service K9 Unit provides an invaluable service to the citizens of London and in doing so enhances the capabilities and effectiveness of the London Police Service.
